9 Part-Time Summer Jobs (AKA Your Summer Side Hustle Guide)

July 3, 2018 By Green Dot Leave a Comment

Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, but it’s also a good time to pick up a little extra work. Seasonal job opportunities give you a chance to enjoy your summer while still earning some cash.

Whether you’re saving for a big purchase, or just want to grow your general savings, consider these nine summer jobs to help boost your income.

1. Bartender

More of a night person? Bartending can be fun and a great way to earn extra income.

When summer hits, restaurants and bars, especially those in seasonal spots, start hiring extra staff to handle the extra demand. As a bartender, you can decide whether you want to work nights or weekends, meaning you still get plenty of time to enjoy yourself.

2. Lifeguard

Love catching the sun or being by the water? Then being a lifeguard at a local beach or pool will help you make some extra money as you spend time outside. You’ll need to get certified in life-saving practices, but you can always take courses through the Red Cross to gain these skills.

3. Swim Teacher

Looking to spend the summer outdoors? Why not make some extra cash?

If you want to spend more time in the water than being a lifeguard allows, consider working part-time as a swim instructor. You can teach everyone from young children to older adults, and you’ll be getting paid to be outside and active.

4. Tutor

As a tutor, you’ll help clients of all ages excel.

Are you an expert on a particular subject? Working as a tutor during the summer can be a great way to help students get ahead in their studies. Plus, tutoring is one of the most flexible jobs since you can decide when to schedule sessions and you can set your own rate. Not to mention, you can expect to earn between $25-$50 per session–not bad for some summer savings.

5. Golf caddy

If you’re looking to exercise in the sun this summer, apply to be a caddy at a local golf course. You’ll help players pick clubs at each hole, and you’ll carry their bag when needed. Being a caddy also pays well: expect up to $200 for a round of golf, in addition to tips. Plus, you never know who you’ll meet!

6. Construction worker

Get your hands dirty and earn some extra money while you spend your summer outside.

Feel like being outside and getting your hands dirty this summer? Lots of construction work happens during this season given the weather, which means you can easily earn extra pay doing everything from fixing roofs to laying tile. You’ll need to have some basic experience and knowledge to get hired, but you’ll get to stay active while getting paid.

7. Landscaper

Like construction, landscaping gives you a chance to be outside and get your hands dirty. From mowing lawns to maintaining gardens, the fact that everything is in bloom over the summer means you’ll have plenty of work.

8. Camp counselor

If you like working with kids, consider being a part-time camp counselor at a day camp. You’ll teach kids new skills and help them socialize and grow, all while staying active. As a part-time counselor, you’ll typically be in a supportive role, but some camps run only in the mornings or on weekends giving you an opportunity for more responsibility if you want it.

9. Park assistant

If you live near a national park, see if they are hiring this summer. These jobs pay an average of $15 an hour and can include being a tour guide, helping out with administration or selling tickets. Plus, you get to enjoy the beautiful scenery!
